Automatic Sorting Line 4.0
Vision, sensor technology and AI for accurate and sustainable sorting of fresh avocados
The challenge
For a producer and distributor of fresh avocados, there was a complex challenge: How do you sort vulnerable fruit accurately, reliably and with consistent quality? Human inspection proved too variable; operators could not maintain a constant standard in assessing ripeness, color and damage. Moreover, the sorting process had to remain efficient and prevent damage to the product.
The customer requested an innovative sorting line suitable for high volumes, with minimal waste and maximum output quality. A solution in which modern technology was central.
The solution
Together with Experience Data and Euro West, Sanders Machinebouw developed a fully automated sorting line powered by artificial intelligence. The line uses AVOS: an advanced AI system trained by experienced quality inspectors.
After filling buffers with avocados, the advanced sorting system starts. Vision technology and smart sensors analyze each product for color, firmness and defects. Even damages under the skin are detected without contact or damage.
Based on this analysis, the AI system automatically divides the avocados into eight quality levels. Each category is routed out of the line through its own sorting point, where the fruit is sorted damage-free via a carefully driven mechanism. Thanks to its modular design, the line can be easily expanded with additional sorting positions.
The results
The sorting line delivers immediately measurable results:
- 30% less waste through accurate assessment and proper distribution of fruit quality
- Constant and objective quality control thanks to AI training
- Better delivery to retail: fruit is delivered matched based on ripeness and quality
- Expandable and future-proof design for maximum flexibility
This solution is an example of how Sanders Machinebouw translates Industry 4.0 technology into practical applications that really make a difference in efficiency, durability and quality.
